Description

The Peña Adobe Historical Society is the non-profit organization committed to preserving the oldest fully restored building in Solano County, the Peña Adobe, California Historic Landmark #534, National Historic Landmark #146 and the former home of the Peña family, one of the first families to settle here. The Society and has initiated restoration projects to preserve the Adobe, built in 1842 and conducts interpretive programs of Vacaville’s local heritage at no cost to the community.

Mission Statement

The purpose of the Peña Adobe Historical Society is to foster the preservation of the Pena Adobe (California State Historic Landmark No. 534 and National Historic Landmark No. 146) and the Mowers-Goheen Museum in Vacaville, California, and provide historically accurate educational programs for the community.

Programs

Preservation of the Peña Adobe- It has been 15 years since the last restoration work was completed on the Peña Adobe. Currently the south wall of the adobe which collapsed years ago and was repaired in 1965, is showing signs of deterioration. The main room of the adobe also has areas where the walls are showing signs of distress.
To begin restoration work requires an on-site visit to assess the condition of the adobe and a report explaining the condition of the adobe and a recommendation to address the deteriorated conditions. The Peña Adobe Historical Society would like to commission such a report from an architecture firm which specializes in historic preservation and present our report to the City of Vacaville to initiate repairs.

Accomplishments

We present a new 3 hour program at Peña Adobe once a month to visitors free of charge, to learn about Vacaville's history. 2019 has seen a 30% increase in attendance at our monthly events, due to an increase in our public outreach program and further research in booking of guests each month.

We also host tours to local students, boy scouts and children in the city summer day camp program. Participants in these events have also increased this year and represent 14% of our total attendance.

Funding Goals

Architect's Report- A recent architect's estimate quoted a figure of $4,900 to complete a report. The Peña Adobe Historical Society would like to raise $2,000 thru GLS to secure an architect's services.
